The Famous Sea Lions: Pier 39's Star Residents

Perhaps the most famous residents of Pier 39 are the California sea lions. These playful animals began taking over Pier 39’s K-Dock in January 1990, and they’ve since become one of the pier’s top attractions. On any given day, hundreds of sea lions can be seen lounging on the docks, barking at each other, and playfully swimming in the water.

During peak seasons, the number of sea lions can swell to more than 2,000, making it one of the best places in the city to observe these marine mammals up close. For those curious about the sea lions, the Sea Lion Center offers free educational exhibits and staff presentations, where visitors can learn more about these fascinating creatures and their role in the local ecosystem.
