• 1894 The De Young Museum was founded and was originally called, The Fine Arts Building. 

• 1906 A massive earthquake and fire devastated the original building and much of the Bay Area. Reconstruction began.

• 1931 Lloyd LaPage Rollins was appointed as the first director of the De Young and Legion of Honor, another prominent art museum in the area, informally uniting the two museums.

• 1906-1989 The De Young museum was still being rebuilt during this time while the San Francisco area also experienced a period of rebirth and revival.

• 1989 The Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the museum's infrastructure. The decision was made to rebuild once again.

• 2005 Final construction of the museum completed.
